Get outside and adopt something!
FRIENDS, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS) Blue Ridge Parkway, has put together three adoption programs that allow individuals and groups to ‘adopt’ a trail, overlook or even a historic cemetery. The NPS has entrusted FRIENDS with the care of these areas, allowing us to supplement their often overstretched maintenance staff resources with our volunteers. We love the empowerment and the flexibility these adoption programs provide to those who are interested in having some real responsibility for their favorite section of the Parkway.
If you’re interested, read more about each program below. We’ve got you covered!
The Parkway lands include over 250 trails that require nearly regular maintenance and repair due to weather damage, water erosion and new growth. Adopt-a-trail was our first adoption program and its been operating strong for over a decade thanks to our hard-working trail crews.
The Parkway has over 250 overlooks, pull outs and parking areas along its 469 miles. Without the maintenance, these areas become littered with trash, graffiti covered and worn.
This is our newest adoption program! Our volunteers are helping the NPS locate cemetery boundaries, clean and maintain these historic sites.
